Manchester United Career
His campaign with the red devils didn’t start well. He suffered a hamstring injury in the pre-season matches and was ruled out for a month. He made his debut for Manchester United in a league game against West Ham United on 27th September 2014. He continued giving some solid performances in the subsequent matches. In the season 2015-16, he suffered a horrendous injury, suffering a double leg fracture, after getting caught in a slide tackle. The injury was very serious; it kept him out for 6 months. On 7th August 2016, he made his first appearance in the line-up, after the horrifying incident.
Earlier in this season, Shaw criticized a lot by the new manager Mourinho, for not being quick enough and not working hard. He was often seeing on the bench being unused in the whole match. The manager Mourinho, who was brought to the club to change the fortunes of the declining devils, had his own ways to manage teams. The former Chelsea manager is known to be very particular about team fitness and loads of hard work on the training ground. He said in a press conference that he didn’t find Shaw good enough to put him in the starting line-up. He has often criticized the defender and there were matches where he was not even in the squad.
Due to the injury problem that Manchester United suffered this season, the defender started getting a place in the line-up. Shaw in an interview mentioned that he wants to win the confidence of the manager and is not the one, who would shy away from working hard. As the season progressed, the performance of the defender gradually improved. In the last match against Anderlecht in the Europa league match, he played all 120 minutes of the match. The red devils emerged victorious in the match and progressed to the semi-final of the league.
Mourinho was impressed by the attitude of the youngster and lauded him after the after the match. Mourinho said, “I always trust the players with special mentality. Always trust them. Luke Shaw did something new today, it means a lot for me. After 90 minutes, before I know that I have to change Zlatan, he had a cramp, I had Ashley Young ready to come on, and he told me I'm going to play for 30 minutes with cramps, no problem. He said if you need to make a change in another position I am ready for it. These kinds of things make me trust the players.”
This appreciation from the manager would have increased morale of Shaw by leaps and bounds. He showed great determination in the match and never backed down. He had been working hard to gain the confidence of his manager and showed everyone, what a fighter he is. With now the special one having the confidence of the defender, he might as well be a regular feature in the starting line-up. He has shown a great character till now and the Red devils would hope he would continue to do so.
