The largest social network Facebook is like a pillar to this world of technological advancements. From a dorm room to being the king of social networking, Facebook never looked back. It won’t be in the coming years too. With a lot of burning desire to expand its footprint, it is exploring the latest technology that is Virtual Reality and a lot more.
Facebook bought nearly 50 companies since its birth and the list is going on. The major acquisitions include WhatsApp, Instagram and Virtual Reality (VR) start-up Oculus Rift. The last one confused the people a bit as social networking and Virtual Reality is completely opposite. One is used to meet people and the other is to enjoy alone time.
This is where Facebook stepped in and tried to bring synergy between these two. Even though we cannot tell the success story yet, it is safe enough to say that the trial itself can benefit Facebook a lot.
In the recent social networking conference F8, Facebook announced a lot of new stuff with VR being the major focus and the list of important things are as follows
1. Camera is the Core
Next time you are looking to buy a phone, make sure it has the best camera. Why? Because Facebook made it clear that camera is the most important thing in the whole smartphone. With AR and VR being the main importance, soon we will be in a world where interacting with our surroundings will be mostly through our smartphone camera. Remember Pokémon Go? In the future, you hunt for goods and other things instead.
2. Virtual Reality became Social
VR headsets came pouring in thanks to Oculus, a VR start-up that showed the potential of VR. Facebook which acquired Oculus is now looking to continue its legacy by improving VR step by step. The first step is to make VR a social networking device. This completely changes the way people use VR and also will buy VR headsets more due to this smart move. Facebook Spaces, an app dedicated to VR socializing is demonstrated and it looks funny and interesting.
3. Messenger is an Entertainment Hub Now
4. Facebook’s Improved Assistant: M Suggest
Remember the AI that resides in the messenger helping you with your daily tasks? The name is M Suggest and Facebook is fine-tuning and improving the AI a lot to take on Google Assistant, Siri, Alexa and now Bixby.
5. Facebook Spheres
Spheres are the sphere-shaped cameras used to capture 360-degree videos. Coming in two variants named Surround 360 x24 and Surround 360 x6 based on the lens number, they have 6 degrees of freedom to capture VR videos in high fidelity.
Along with these, there are many other new things Facebook introduced which will make Facebook step into the game of VR and AR and from the looks of it, Facebook is aiming for the number 1 spot. Best of luck, Facebook.
