21 myths about being fat - Don't shy away being Overweight

Being overweight is a myth

1. Being fat is a disease

At best, it can be described as “excess weight”. Obesity is a disorder and not a disease. Similarly being overweight isn’t a disease either.

2. One should be “fit” before attending social events

Have you ever seen ads like “lose weight before marriage season”. Ever wondered that why losing weight is important before marriage only? If one wants to lose weight, they should be doing it for lifelong and not for a wedding party.

3. Fat isn’t fit

Fitness really depends on the person. A person who is overweight and yet can walk fast without getting breathless can be called fit. A thin person may not be able to do the same. He or she may have a smoking habit.

4. Fat isn’t beautiful

It is more like fat isn’t considered beautiful by other people. It depends on the mindset. If a fat person thinks they are attractive, then they are. For example, Melissa McCarthy – one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood.

5. Fat people have more heart attacks

On the contrary, fat people are more likely to survive a heart attack.

6. Losing weight anyhow is good

Not always. Crash dieting can do more harm than all the excess fat.

7. Fat people are at risk of respiratory diseases

Respiratory diseases can happen to anybody who smokes. Tobacco doesn’t differentiate between fat

and thin!

8. All fat is bad

Fat around the abdomen is actually bad news. Fat on areas like thighs and legs aren’t that bad.

9. Fat people are fat because they overeat

Not always true. A person can become fat because of various reasons ranging from thyroid disorders to depression. The fact that depression isn’t a “visible” disease makes it doubly hard on the person.

10. BMI is the only indicator of fitness

Again not true. BMI or the body mass index doesn’t take in account factors like bone structure or fitness of a person. It also doesn’t understand the difference between weight gained through exercise or through eating fatty foods. This means that a well-built person can have a BMI over 30 indicating that they are obese!

11. You can achieve targeted weight loss

Not true at all. The only way to reduce weight is to lose it from everywhere!

12. Becoming fat in middle age is “given”

Simple changes like exercising more than you did in your 20-s makes a lot of difference.

13. Cellulite is the worst fat

Cellulite is nothing but dimply skin found on thighs and hips. Cellulite is like any other type of fat.

14. Thin people don’t get diabetes

Diabetes can happen to anybody who is unable to control their blood sugar levels!

Everybody’s BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) becomes slow after they reach 40. In case of women it slows down as they reach 30!

17. Body fat percentage should be as low as possible

The ideal “body fat” level of a person depends on factors like gender, age, bone structure and genetics. Generally, body fat should be within 15 percent for men and 25 percent for women.

18. Fat people cannot run marathons

Who says so? Anybody who thinks so should read this blog - Overweight People run Marathon

19. Fat people are lazy

This is not even a myth. It’s what people choose to think about fat people! It is just how most people think skinny people don’t eat!
