We live in an age of voice assistants. From searching something to making a quick call, everything can be done by just using your voice. With such potential, they are now being the most focused part of the smartphone environment. We have seen huge tech companies come forward to develop new voice assistants like Alexa by Amazon, Cortana by Windows, Assistant by Google and Siri by Apple. But what this list lacks is the presence of Samsung.
But now Samsung entered the voice assistants game with its new and revolutionary voice assistant Bixby. Let us look into Bixby carefully.
What is Bixby?
Officially announced by Samsung along with its this year Flagship S8, this is the AI system designed solely by Samsung which acts as a personal assistant that can solely operate the whole S8 by just using our voice.
Based on Samsung intentions, Bixby is the next big thing from the company to take on all the major competitors with advanced technology that is being worked on from years back secretly.
With its debut on S8, it will soon be available to multiple Samsung devices that are compatible. Bixby will be first available in only two languages, Korean and English (USA). It will then roll out along with time for other languages.
What can Bixby do?
Bixby operations can be broadly classified into 4 areas. They are,
- Integration with others
Unlike all the other assistants, there is no keyword that can launch Bixby directly (As observed from the launch video) and there will be likely to be one and it will be mostly like others, its name itself. But for now, it is safe to say Bixby can be activated by a hardware button. The voice can be used for typical applications like
- Setting reminders (based on routine and location is also there)
- Opening apps
- Sending messages
- Making calls
This area does not cater any new features and just follows all the other assistants.
This is the area where Bixby shines. The launch video clearly shows obtaining information about the object that you are looking at in the camera. Another interesting feature is recognizing even landmarks and buildings and also gathering photos taken near that. Others include
- Translating Foreign text
- Scanning QR codes
- Scanning Barcodes and Labels
- Intelligent Object detection that can lead to shopping links
It is like the Shelf on One plus 3. It is simply a place where all the relevant apps, customized cards and new services are displayed. This can also be used as a widget space. Bixby makes this space more intelligent and flexible based on your usage and display complete personalized content
4. Integration with Others
Just like all the other assistants, Bixby can be intelligent enough to communicate with all the other devices your Smartphone interacts. It can communicate and control all the overwhelming number of devices and make your life easier as Samsung desired. This may include controlling all your intelligent home appliances or your multimedia like TV, computer stations etc.
These above features pretty much explain the uniqueness of Bixby and if you are eagerly waiting, you just have to bear a few months more as the date of Bixby launch may vary based on the area and the language. Who know? If we are lucky enough, Samsung may roll out Bixby to every device.
