Whistle Blowing – Ethical or Unethical?

Ethics

At one point in time, all of us enter into the professional world and work as a part of an organization. However big or small the organization may be, the duty of every employee working there is to maintain the secrecy of the company under all circumstances.

In most of the cases, the employees manage to keep their spirits high and dedicate their effort to the company for which they are working. However, at times, situations arise during which a particular employee speaks ill of the company after witnessing some unethical practices within the walls and outside. In these cases, the employee who has revealed his or her company to the outside world is termed as a Whistle Blower.

Whistle

Though a Whistle Blower is sometimes looked down upon, here are the reasons why a Whistle Blower raises his or her voice in the first place:

  • The employee faces corruption in his or her own team or between collaborative teams.

  • He or she witnesses the practice of bribery to get an illegal product pass without letting the society know.

  • He or she approaches the higher authority with his or her complaints but get turned down despite several requests and protests.

  • His or her colleagues to turn a deaf ear to him or her while they continue indulging in malpractices.

  • In this case, though the employee is bonded to his or her company by loyalty, he or she feels the necessity to be loyal to the society first and save many lives from further harm.

Thus, the employee becomes a Whistle Blower.

Though the company looks down upon a Whistle Blower, it has to be admitted that being disloyal to his or her company, the Whistle Blower actually shows loyalty to the society which is more ethical than unethical as this leads to the development of the society in the long run. Thus, instead of cursing the Whistle Blower and taking unfair actions against him or her blaming the person for committing treachery, the company must resort to other relevant tasks so that the name of the company is not spoilt.

  • Acceptance of Fault

Instead of criticizing the Whistle Blower, the company must accept the fact that some employees had resorted to unfair means to gain extra profit.

Sorry

  • Implementing an Ethical Code of Conduct

The company must introduce certain codes of conduct and see to it that all the employees, no matter how experienced or inexperienced the person might be, obey the ethical rules and regulations.

Ethics

  • Executing an Investigation

The company must employ a team of workers to investigate on the concerned matter for which they have incurred a blame. In fact, the team of investigators should be appointed from a third party organization so that justice prevails.

  • Introduction of Corrective Measures

The company must see to it that these malpractices of which they have been accused are completely stopped. Moreover, they must introduce certain corrective measures so that the society does not suffer because of their fault.

Mistake

Thus, if these measures can be taken, both the employer and the employee would be happy and not only will the company but the society also would benefit as a whole.

Harmony
