Drinking red wine in moderation has long been thought of as good for your heart. The alcohol and some other substances present in red wine known as “antioxidants” can help in preventing a heart attack by stimulating the production of good cholesterol and can also protect the arteries from any type of damage.

All the information written above might sound good to you if you are used to enjoying a glass of wine every day, but doctors may not encourage their patients to start drinking wine every day. They are careful because they believe too much of alcohol can have adverse effects on your health.

In spite of the alcoholic content of red wine, Doctors tend to agree about its health benefits. They agree that the antioxidants, resveratrol and flavonoids present in red wine can be good for your heart.

 

How is red wine healthy for the heart?

Red wine definitely has more health usage than any other type of alcohol, but it cannot be exactly whether it’s better than white wine or beer in terms of health benefits. There is no clear evidence to suggest that it offers better health benefits than other types of alcohol.

Antioxidants present in red wine, known as polyphenols may help with protecting the blood vessels of your heart. A polyphenol known as resveratrol has got special attention from studies about red wine and its health benefits.

It’s one of the main components of red wine and is thought to protect your blood vessels and increase the amount of good cholesterol in your heart. It also helps against the formation of blood clots.

All the research about resveratrol has not been done on humans, but on animals. All the good findings were reported from tests on mice and the results may not be applicable to humans.

Resveratrol is present in the grapes which are used to make red wine. It’s mainly present in the skin of the grapes so you can get all its benefits just by drinking grape juice. Red wine has more resveratrol present in it because it’s fermented for a longer duration than white wines. The fermentation is done with the skin of the grapes and that increases the amount of resveratrol. If you are not a daily drinker of wine or don’t want to experiment with alcohol and it's health benefits you may drink grape juice everyday for protecting your heart.

Medical studies have shown that moderate amount of red wine or any type of alcohol can be beneficial for your heart. Some of the benefits are listed below:

  • Alcohol stimulates the production of HDL cholesterol, which is known as the good cholesterol.
  • Prevents formation of blood clots in your heart
  • It also helps in protecting the arteries of your heart against LDL cholesterol.
  • So should you drink in moderation or avoid it altogether?

The health benefits of red wine look tempting enough for you to start drinking it every day. Anybody who drinks a glass of a red wine every day is supposed to be at a lower risk of a heart attack.

Before you start drinking red wine every day, we need to know more about its actual health benefits and whether it’s better than beer or white wine.

The American Heart Association and doesn’t recommend that you start drinking red wine everyday to protect your heart. You will be at the risk of getting addicted to it and that can cause severe health problems.
