In the recent past, Juventus has turned out to be one of the biggest clubs in the Europe circuit. It was not long ago, that they were relegated to the second tier of the Italian League. Ever since the relegation, they have been a force to reckon with. They have now 5 consecutive league titles to their name. They are a club that no one wants to draw against in the Champions League.
This glory of the club has churned out many world class players over the years. Not all their legendary players have been academy products. They have done some brilliant work in the transfer market to get the best of the players at a bargain.
Here we look at 4 players that came to Turin on free transfer:-
#1 Andrea Pirlo:-
Releasing Pirlo was the biggest mistake committed by Milan, in the season 2011/12. Juventus saw the opportunity and signed him on free transfer and the rest is history. Pirlo won three consecutive player of the year award in Seria A. He helped Juve win 4 consecutive titles. His set piece skills were unmatched and created more than 100 chances in his first season at the club. He was also included in the Seria A team of the year, in all four seasons he played at the club. Pirlo changed the fortunes of the club and established himself as the legend of the club.
Sir Alex Ferguson was a world class manager and he probably, did everything right at the club except, letting Pogba go for free to Juventus. This mistake would go down as one of the most costly one, as it took 89 million Euros to rectify it. At Old Lady, Pogba established himself as one of the best midfielder in the current scenario. However, not to put all the weight on Sir Ferguson, it was Pogba’s manager who didn’t get along with the legendary Manchester United manager, which led to the transfer of the Italian star. He was included in the team of the year in Seria A for 3 years in a row. Pogba’s flamboyance made him one of the fan favourite, but ultimately came back to Old Trafford on a bank breaking deal.
#3 Dani Alves:-
Alves is regarded as one the greatest right-backs in the recent years. The 33 year old was one of the pivotal players in the Barcelona setup. However, Barca didn’t find him useful enough and released the player last year. Juventus pounced on the opportunity to sign the player for free. This was certainly one of the gifts received by Juventus from Barcelona. Since then, Barcelona has struggled to find an apt replacement for the player and this has been their greatest weakness this year. Alves has signed a two year contract with the club, with an option for the third year. He has successfully established himself in the starting eleven and very possibly would be looking to end his European career in Turin.
#4 Sami Khedira:-
Khedira was struggling to establish himself in the starting eleven, in Real Madrid. In 2015, he was allowed to leave Bernabeu, on a free transfer to Juventus. This was another master stroke played by the Turin team. He has settled in the starting eleven very smoothly and has helped Juve replace the big boots of the legendary players like Pirlo, Vidal and Pogba. He is now in the core of the midfield of the Old Lady. He has clocked more than 3000 minutes this season, showing no injury concerns. He is in the making of one of the legends of the club.
